Final Stats
Cathedral City, Calif. - The UNLV Rebels' offense jumped out of the gates quickly with eight runs over the first two innings and held on for an 8-5 win. The Rebels racked up eight runs on seven hits during their first two at-bats while facing Helen Pena and Anna Cahn in the circle for Cal Poly.
In the first inning, Kendall Fearn and Ashli Holland stepped up consecutively and registered back-to-back RBI-singles, off of Pena, to give UNLV a quick 2-0 lead. Brittany Meade followed one batter later with a single to center, which brought home two more runners.
UNLV came to bat in the second inning to see that Pena was relieved in the circle by Cahn, but still managed to continue its offensive success. Cahn wound up loading the bases before Holland hit her second RBI-single of the game. Laura Briones then plated the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field. Meade duplicated her first-inning output and produced two more RBI with a double to deep left.
Cal Poly tried to rally back, but ultimately came up short after scoring two runs each in the third and fourth innings and a single tally in the sixth.
Jessica O'Connor (4-1) earned the win for UNLV in complete-game fashion. O'Connor allowed five runs, four earned, on 10 hits. She walked four and fanned four, as well.
Pena (1-3) was stuck with the loss in 5.0 innings of work. She threw all, but the second inning, while being roughed up for four runs on six hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Cahn threw one inning and surrendered four runs on three hits, while striking out one and walking two.
UNLV is back in action next Thursday, Feb. 26, when they face the Drake Bulldogs at 6:00 pm, in the Eller Media Stadium Tournament. Besides UNLV and Drake, Loyola Marymount, Florida Atlantic and Wright State will make appearances in Las Vegas next weekend.
