LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Elliot Wronski has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for a program-record tying fifth time in his career, the league announced Wednesday.
The native of Cheltenham, England, was a combined 4-0 at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions while helping UNLV to wins over ranked opponents San Francisco and Nebraska.
In singles play, Wronski, ranked 111th, downed USF's Thong Tu in three sets and then upset No. 74 David Bendheim of Nebraska 6-4, 7-5. Wronski and partner Luca Barlocchi also picked up two doubles victories, including stunning 17th-ranked Bendheim and Calin Paar of the Cornhuskers 8-3 on Sunday.
Wronski is just the second men's player in history to earn at least five player-of-the-week honors, joining Henner Nehles (five from 2003-05).
The Rebels (4-0), who returned to the national rankings this week at No. 72, are back in action with a trio of home matches over the weekend. Cal Poly is here on Friday, New Mexico State on Saturday and Southern Miss on Sunday. All matches start at 10 a.m. and admission to the Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge. TCU's Nina Munch-Soegaard was the MWC women's honoree this week.
