Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (17-8) kept their winning ways going Friday morning with an 8-2 victory over the Canisius Griffins (4-6) in the National Invitational Softball Tournament held in San Jose, Calif., cast in the shadows of the 101 and 280/680 highways. Stephanie Bregante (4-1) pitched a gem, as she tied the program record with 15 strikeouts in the contest. The victory pushed UNLV's winning streak to five, while they have now won 11 of its last 12.
After three scoreless innings of play, Jaci Hull got UNLV on the board with a two-run home run in the fourth. The home run cleared the makeshift fence in left and scored Brittany Bolinger, who had led off the frame with a walk. Alyssia De La Torre singled two batters later and came around to score the third run on a single by Brittany Meade.
UNLV put up another three spot in the fifth. Tara Bendt began the inning with a single and took third on a single by Marissa Nichols. Bendt wound up scoring when an errant throw went into centerfield on Nichols' steal of second. Following a walk issued to Bolinger, Hull delivered a double down the line in right to score Nichols and push Bolinger to third. Bolinger eventually scored on a single by Ashli Holland.
The Rebels added a seventh run to their tally in the sixth on an RBI-single by Bolinger.
Canisius got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth off a two-run home run by Kaitlin Lancellotti. Michelle Fridey scored on the home run after reaching on a single.
Meade put the finishing touches on the game's scoring with an RBI-single to score Chey Farley in the eighth inning.
Bregante notched her fourth-straight victory in the circle, while notching her fourth complete game of the season. In all, she struck out a career-high 15 to tie Jacque Kerrigan's record set in 2004. She allowed two runs on four hits and walked one.
Juliette Bowers (0-2) suffered the loss in 4.1 innings of work. Bowers allowed six runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking two.
Caroline Main finished up the final 2.2 stanzas in relief of Bowers. Main was touched for two runs and five hits. She struck out three and walked one.
UNLV is back in action at 3:15 pm, Friday afternoon and will face Sacramento State at PAL Field.
