Final Stats
SACRAMENTO - The UNLV Rebels (22-9) had their 10-game winning streak snapped with an 8-0, six-inning loss to the #10/7 California Golden Bears Friday afternoon in the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. The Rebels were shut out for only the second time in 2009.
California struck for a 2-0 lead with two tallies in the second. Sanoe Kekahuna deposited a Stephanie Bregante offering off the scoreboard in left-center to break open the scoreless game. Taylor Kelly immediately followed Kekahuna's shot with a triple to right and later scored on an RBI-single by Frani Echavarria.
The Bears added four runs in the fifth to push its lead to six. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Gina Leomiti.
Cal extended the lead to eight with two runs in the sixth off Jessica O'Connor, who replaced Bregante at the top of the inning. Jamia Reid registered a sacrifice fly, while Leomiti pitched in an RBI-single.
Bregante dropped to 6-2 on the year with the loss. She lasted 5.0 innings and was touched for six runs, five earned, on eight hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Marissa Drewrey improved to 14-5 in 6.0 innings of work. Drewrey allowed only three hits, while striking out nine and walking two.
UNLV is back in action Saturday afternoon with a contest against Sacramento State (1:00 pm) and then play Cal Poly (5:00 pm) in the nightcap. The Rebels have played both squads previously with victories in each affair.
