Final Stats

PROVO, Utah - The UNLV Rebels (25-16 overall, 2-5 Mountain West) dropped a 7-1 affair at Miller Field in Provo, Utah, to the BYU Cougars (31-14, 6-0) Friday night. UNLV was unable to take advantage of its chances, as the offense left the bases loaded on three occasions, while leaving 12 runners stranded during the game. BYU, on the other hand, left 10 behind, but made the most of its opportunities.

The Cougars pounced early on Traci Odegard (9-6), as they racked up two runs off of three hits. Andrea Ramirez stepped up to the plate with the bases juiced following two singles and a hit batter and promptly delivered a grounder through the left-side to bring home the game's first score. Coreen Lopez was credited with the second RBI of the inning with a groundout.

UNLV got one run back in the top of the second with help from two Cougar errors. Kendall Fearn led off the frame with a single off of Christie Zinanti. Fearn took second on an errant throw and third on a ground out double play. Laura Briones hit a hard grounder to the right-side that slid under Kristin Delahoussaye's glove at second, which allowed Fearn to score.

BYU pushed back to a two-run lead with a score in the bottom of the second from an RBI-single by Purcell. The Cougars loaded the bases up following a double, a hit batter and a walk prior to Purcell's hit.

Purcell extended BYU's lead to 6-1 with three more RBI in the fourth. She stepped up with two on and cranked a three-run shot to left-center.

The Cougars added a seventh run in the sixth on a ball put in play by Ramirez. Stephanie Bregante entered in relief in the sixth and allowed the first three batters she faced to reach base before Ramirez came to the plate. Ramirez hit a hard grounder to short that Jaci Hull misplayed and let the runner score from third.

Odegard suffered the loss for UNLV in 4.0 innings of work. She was touched for six runs on 10 hits. She struck out two, walked one and hit two.

Zinanti went the distance for BYU, as she threw a complete-game, four-hitter and allowed only one score. She fanned 11 batters, but was a bit wild, as she walked five and plunked two.

UNLV and BYU return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 pm PT tilt at Miller Field. The game will broadcast live on BYU-TV. The channel can be found locally in Las Vegas on Cox Digital Ch. 352 and DirecTV Ch. 374.
