SALT LAKE CITY - The 65th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team was swept in doubles play and couldn't come all the way back in a 4-3 defeat playing indoors at No. 54 Utah on Thursday.
The Rebels fell to 12-9 overall and 1-2 in Mountain West Conference play while the Utes improved to 13-6 and 1-0.
Utah opened a 1-0 lead after taking all three doubles matches. UNLV fought back to go ahead 3-2 after getting three points in singles: senior Elliot Wronski won at the top of the lineup, 6-1, 6-3 over Wes Hancock; Luca Barlocchi won 7-6, 6-2 over Benito Suriano at No. 3; and Attila Toth got by Jason Smits 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on court five.
The Rebels, however, could not pull out either of the remaining two matches. Mehdi Bouras was nipped 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 by Phillip Eilers at No. 2 and then senior Wesley Burrows fell in the clincher to John Taylor at the fourth position, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Next up, UNLV looks to rebound when it faces No. 50 TCU on Friday in Salt Lake City.
