April 30, 2009

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (29-18 overall, 5-7 Mountain West) lost a 6-1 decision Thursday night to the BYU Cougars (35-14, 8-0) at Eller Media Stadium. The win extended BYU's season-long winning streak to 16, while the Rebels had their streak snapped at four. Defensive miscues were the story of the game, as the Cougars capitalized on three by UNLV for their six runs. The Rebels took advantage of one BYU error to score their only run of the game.

After a scoreless first inning, BYU broke open the scoring with six tallies in the second with help from the three errors. The Cougars, who brought 10 batters to the plate, scattered four singles in the inning and picked up one walk.

UNLV cut the deficit to five with a score of its own in the third. Following an error to open up the inning, the Rebels loaded up the bases with help from a single by Brittany Bolinger and a walk issued to Jaci Hull. Ashli Holland plated the run with an infield chopper that scored Tara Bendt from third.

BYU's Paige Affleck improved to 17-7 on the year with her complete-game effort. Affleck only allowed four hits in the game and one unearned run. She struck out eight, but walked four in the process.

Jessica O'Connor dropped to 11-7 with the loss in 5.1 innings of work. O'Connor surrendered 10 hits and six runs, only one of which was earned. She fanned four Cougar hitters and walked one.

Stephanie Bregante relieved O'Connor with one out recorded in the sixth and was flawless. Bregante managed to get the final two outs after BYU loaded up the bases.

UNLV is back in action on Friday night (6:00 pm) when they welcome the Utah Utes to Las Vegas.
