Leading Off:The UNLV Rebels hit the road for their final regular-season game of 2009 this weekend. The Rebels have a Saturday, May 9, affair with the San Diego State Aztecs scheduled for 1:00 pm.
The game will close down the Mountain West Conference slate for both squads, as SDSU holds a 9-5 mark in league play compared to UNLV's 7-7 tally.
On Deck:The UNLV Rebels will hope to have their name announced on Sunday, May 10, when the 2009 NCAA Tournament field is revealed.
The tournament's selection show will be aired at 7:00 pm on ESPNU, which can be found in Las Vegas on DirecTV Ch. 614 and/or Cox Digital Ch. 320.
The UNLV Rebels will close down the 2009 regular season and MWC slate with a contest at San Diego State on Saturday, May 9 (1:00 pm).
Where They Stand:The UNLV Rebels sit 38th in the latest edition of the NFCA's Simulated Ratings Percentage Index. (FullySports.com) The RPI is a mathematical calculation used to determine a team's success, using a calculated strength of schedule and won-loss percentage.
Currently, UNLV owns a 4-11 mark against team's rated within the top 50. They notched its four victories over Cal Poly (RPI #23), Georgia Tech (#25), Notre Dame (#32) and Long Beach State (#37).
Seven of the 11 losses came to squads ranked in the current USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll.
Eight of the 11 came to squads ranked in the current ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll.
Four came against teams with RPIs in the 1-10 range.
The Rebels own a 27-7 mark when it comes to playing squads in the 51 and up range.
When it comes to Mountain West Conference foes, UNLV is the highest rated of the six teams. BYU comes in second at #39, while San Diego State has slipped to #54.
Chasing History:The 2009 UNLV Rebels have done quite a bit of offensive work and it has shown up in their overall statistics compared to Rebel squads of the past (dating back to 1985).
Currently, this year's edition owns the all-time best batting average (.307), slugging (.481) and on-base percentage (.393), while sitting tied for the top in RBI (257).
The team ranks second only to the 1995 squad in runs (`95: 298 to `09: 291) and to the 2005 squad in home runs (`05: 50 to `09: 47).
Other team superlatives:
-Second to have four players reach the 30-run milestone in a single season (2007).
-Third to have two players reach the 10-home run milestone in a single season (2002, 2007).
-Third to have three players reach the 20-walk milestone in a single season (1995, 1996).
-Fourth to have three players reach the 30-RBI milestone in a single season (1995, 2001, 2005).
Individual Superlatives:
-Alyssia De La Torre is only the second player to record at least five doubles, five triples and five home runs in a single season (Marissa Nichols in 2005 with 17 doubles, eight triples and 18 home runs). De La Torre currently has five across the board.
-Jaci Hull is only the second player to record at least 50 hits and 50 RBI in a single season (Kim Rondina in 1995 with 88 hits and 58 RBI). Hull currently has 52 hits and 50 RBI.
