May 7, 2009

LAS VEGAS -

For the second straight spring, the UNLV women's soccer coaching staff asked each class to come up with a community service event for the whole team to participate in. The freshman class choose for the team to participate in a health awareness walk. We now present Justine Sauder's report on the team's experience. A report from the sophomore class will be coming up soon as well.

The freshman class of the UNLV women's soccer team decided on volunteering at the Fit Family Health Awareness Walk, Run, Roll, or Stroll. The walk took place Saturday, April 25th at Town Square Shopping Center. This event, organized by Weight Watchers, was created to raise awareness in the Las Vegas community of the links between obesity, heart disease, Cancer, and diabetes. The 5K walk was free to register, but donations to the American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, and the American Diabetes Association were accepted.

All of the Rebels came to Town Square bright and early to help set up tables and booths before the walk. We were stationed at the Registration table, where all of us worked vigorously to make check in as smooth as possible. With goodie bags, programs, and raffle tickets in hand, we checked in hundreds of eager participants. The turn out was great, as was the enormous amount of generous donations. Check below for a photo gallery of the Rebels at the walk.
