UNLV women's soccer game notes
It is the second year in a row that LMU and UNLV will face off in each other's season openers, as last year they battled to a 1-1 tie in Los Angeles. The Rebels head into the season returning eight starters from last season where they went 11-7-3 and finished tied for fourth place in the MWC. They were recently tabbed to finish fifth this season by the MWC preseason coaches' poll. The Rebels are led by senior Brianna Moore and junior Amanda Forrester. The two combined to make up almost half of the Rebels' offense last year, with the other half credited to junior Ashleigh Shoughro. Senior goalkeeper Alicia Lugo is expected to own the nets again this year, as last year she earned six shutouts and boasted a 1.08 goals against average.
The Lions went 10-6-3 last season and also enter this season with eight returning starters from last year's squad. They earned a third place finish in the WCC and were recently tabbed to finish fifth this season by the WCC preseason coaches' poll. They are led by last season's leading goal scorer, junior Julie Gallaudet, as well as last season's top assist getter, junior Lori Sorentino. Senior goalkeeper Allyssa Clark is expected to start and is coming off of a strong campaign last year where she earned eight shutouts and boasted a 1.02 goals against average.
For Friday night's season opener every fan in attendance will receive a free women's soccer poster as well as a free schedule card that lets you know when and where the Rebels will be playing all season long. Also for Friday night only, fans who purchase one ticket will get another ticket completely free. Adult tickets are $7 and kids age 12 and under are free all season long. UNLV Students get in free with their Rebel cards while staff/ faculty and senior citizen tickets are only 5$. All season long you can get your high school team in for free, just have your coach email the team's roster to Rebecca.McDonald@unlv.edu. The Rebels next home game is Sunday, August 30th when they take on Cal State Bakersfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm and fans are invited to stick around after the game for the Rebel players and coaches to sign autographs. Friday, September 11th, the Rebels host UC Irvine with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm. It is club night at Peter Johann Memorial Field and kids are encouraged to wear their team jerseys. There will be kids' games and festivities at half time and after the game.
