LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's soccer team scored an early goal but it wouldn't hold up, and the Rebels would have to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Illinois State in the second game of the UNLV Nike Classic on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The tie moved both teams to 0-1-1 on the season. In the first game of the day, New Mexico defeated Cal State Bakersfield 2-0.
The Rebels nearly went up 1-0 in the opening five minutes when junior Ashleigh Shoughro broke loose from the defense and took the ball in one-on-one with the goalie, but sent her shot just wide of the left post. UNLV got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute on freshman Colette Jepson's first career goal. Shoughro set up the score when she took the ball down the right side and sent a long cross to the left side, where the ball found a waiting Jepson. With no one on her, Jepson calmly buried her shot to the far right post for the score, putting UNLV up 1-0.
UNLV dominated the play in the first half, outshooting the Redbirds 6-0, but it was a different game in the second half. ISU kept up the pressure, with both teams accounting for five shots, and the visitors would break into the scoring column in the 69th minute. Jessica Carlson sent her corner kick from the left corner into the middle of the box where it found the head of Ammanda Wisniewski, who redirected the ball into the goal from about five yards out to tie the game at 1-1.
The game would go into overtime, and this time the momentum was in ISU's favor, as it got off a total of five shots to one for UNLV in the two extra periods. Alyssa Schulz nearly ended the game for the Redbirds in the first overtime, as she got in close to the goal and attempted to chip the ball into the goal, but UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo made an impressive leap to snag the ball and bring it down for a save in the 94th minute.
UNLV finished the game with a 12-10 edge on shots, while ISU had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. Lugo finished with seven saves in goal for UNLV, and Sasha Reiber made three saves for the Redbirds.
The UNLV Nike Classic continues on Sunday, as New Mexico and Illinois State play at 10:30 am, while UNLV hosts Cal State Bakersfield at 1 pm. Both games will be at Peter Johann Memorial Field, while Sunday is also "Autograph Day" for UNLV, with fans having the chance to get signatures from the Rebel players and coaches following their game.
