LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - On her Senior Day, Las Vegas native Ashleigh Shoughro set or tied four season and career records with a two-goal performance that carried UNLV past Air Force 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West Conference soccer action on Saturday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. With their second-straight win, the Rebels improved to 10-5 overall, 2-2 in league play, while the Falcons dropped to 7-8-1, 0-4 in the MWC.
Shoughro opened the game by converting a penalty kick in the fifth minute after Air Force was called for a foul for pulling her down in the box. She then increased UNLV's lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute when she kicked in a shot from short range off a cross from Danielle O'Neill.
The two goals gave her 13 for the season, setting a new UNLV record, Shoughro had come into the game tied for the record at 11, along with Annii Magliulo (2002) and Anita Pedford (2001). The two goals also give Shoughro 26 in her career, breaking the previous school record of 25, shared by both Magliulo and Pedford. Her 29 points this season breaks her previous record of 28, set in 2008, while her 68 career points ties the UNLV school record, held by Magliulo.
The game would go into halftime with the Rebels up 2-0. UNLV kept up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Falcons 7-0 in the final 45 minutes. The lead increased to 3-0 in the 64th minute on a short shot from senior Colette Jepson for her fifth score of the year. Brittney Flores started the scoring play when she sent a long crossing pass to the left side to Amanda Forrester, and Forrester found Jepson unmarked in the box and fed her a pass to set up the score.
UNLV goalies Kylie Wassell (one save) and Ashlee Dela Cruz combined to post the shutout for the Rebels. Kelly Stambaugh finished with five saves in the net for Air Force. UNLV held a 16-4 edge on shots for the afternoon, and 12-3 on corner kicks.
The Rebels finish the regular season with three straight road games, beginning with a Thursday, Oct. 21 contest at BYU starting at 6 pm (PT).
