DENVER (UNLVRebels.com) - Mike Mota's goal off a header early in the first half gave the UNLV men's soccer team its first win at Denver since 2003, a 1-0 victory against the Pioneers on Sunday afternoon in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at CIBER Field. The win moved UNLV into a tie for second in the Mountain Division along with Denver at 2-2-1, and the teams are both tied for third in the overall MPSF standings with seven points.
The winning goal came in the 19th minute, as Camilo Valencia sent a corner kick into the box that Mota headed in off the far post in the 19th minute. That score. which was also Mota's first career goal, would hold up the entire game as Rebel goalkeeper Simon Cook posted three saves to earn the shutout, his third of the past two weeks.
Denver finished the game with a 17-10 edge on shots, though the Rebels had five shots on goal to just three for the Pioneers. Corner kicks were 4-3 in favor of Denver.
UNLV returns home to begin play against the Pacific Division teams, beginning with Friday night's contest against Cal State Bakersfield, starting at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
