LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
UNLV Weekly Soccer Notes
The UNLV women's soccer team ends the regular season with a road contest at San Diego State on Friday afternoon at 3 pm.
The Aztecs are also the host of next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament, which runs from Nov. 3-6. After missing the league tournament last year, UNLV has clinched a spot in this year's event, as the Rebels come into the final weekend of play with seven points. Air Force and TCU are both tied for seventh with three points, and can not catch the Rebels in the standings with a win. The Rebels are locked into either the fifth or sixth seed, with the tournament parings to be announced on Saturday night.
While the Rebels have not done as well on the road in league play, they do have one of the top scoring offenses, at 1.94 goals per game, and are always a threat to place the ball in the back of the net. SDSU meanwhile averages just 0.94 gpg, but is allowing only 1.11 goals per contest.
Players To Watch
Senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro returned to her scoring form from her sophomore season, as she currently leads the Mountain West in both goals (13) and points (29), and ranks in the top 20 in the nation in both. Three more players also have at least 10 points this year, senior Amanda Forrester (six goals, three assists, 15 points), sophomore Colette Jepson (five goals, three assists, 13 points), and sophomore Macy Jo Harrison (four goals, four assists, 12 points).
In goal for UNLV is freshman keeper Kylie Wassell, who has a 1.43 GAA, 59 saves and three shutouts on the year.
Scouting San Diego State
The Aztecs bring a 4-2 conference mark and stand in third place coming into Friday's season finale after splitting their Utah road trip, winning at Utah and losing 1-0 at BYU. SDSU had won four of its last six after starting out the season 2-7-3.
Leading the squad is Michaela DeJesus with 12 points off four goals and four assists, while Sarah Halverson has eight points (three goals, two assists). In goal is Aubree Southwick, who has posted a 1.09 GAA with 82 saves in 1645.51 minutes of action this year.
