Marshall, Rebels Are Golden

Oct. 29, 2010

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - Sophomore Nick Marshall scored a golden goal in the 95th minute to lift the UNLV men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory at San Jose State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Friday night from Spartan Stadium. The win was the Rebels' second conference road victory of the year, the most since the 2003 season, and improved them to 6-9-1, 3-4-1 in the conference. SJSU dropped to 7-8-2, 1-5-2 in MPSF play.

UNLV got on the scoreboard first thanks to senior Stephen Sifuentes. Jonny Espinoza intercepted a Spartan pass, and set Sifuentes up for a shot that went to the bottom right corner of the net for a score in the 28th minute. SJSU tied the game in the 40th minute of an unassisted score by Josh Bemecke.

Both goalies made two saves each in the second half to keep the game tied at 1-1. Just under five minutes into the first overtime, Marshall scored the game winner off a close shot from five yards out to the top right corner, giving UNLV the 2-1 victory.

SJSU held a 20-14 edge on shots, and a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks. Simon Cook posted six saves in goal for the Rebels, while Rene Martinez finished with five for the Spartans.

UNLV returns to action on Sunday with a road contest at Sacramento State, starting at 1 pm.
