UNLV Coaches To Take Shots From The Heart

Nov. 15, 2010

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball head coach Lon Kruger and assistant coach Greg Grensing will be participating in "Shots from the Heart," a free-throw shooting tournament to help create awareness for heart disease.

College basketball coaches around the nation will compete against one another in the project, which was organized and is being coordinated by CollegeInsider.com, and will benefit the American Heart Association. The event will also pay tribute to the late Skip Prosser who passed away on July 26, 2007, of a heart attack.

Two 64-coach brackets have been developed - one for head coaches and one for assistants. The tournament begins Nov. 15 and winners will advance to the next round, which will be completed the following month, culminating with a free throw final contested at the 2011 Final Four in Houston.

Kruger's first-round matchup will be against Davidson's Bob McKillop and will take place Nov. 22-30, while Grensing will go against St. Mary's Rick Croy, Nov. 15-21.

Coaches will not have to actually compete against each other on the same court. Each coach will shoot 25 free throws at his convenience. A member of the athletics department staff will tally the results and the coach with the most makes will advance. To avoid ties, shots 1-20 made are worth one point, shots 21-24 are worth two points and shot 25 is worth three points. There are additional tie-breaking rules such as consecutive makes, etc.
