SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - Fifth-seed UNLV scored three first half goals on the way to a 4-1 victory over fourth-seeded Utah in the first game of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday afternoon from the SDSU SportsDeck. The Rebels now advance to play top-seed New Mexico on Thursday at 12 pm in a game televised live on The Mtn.
"I thought our girls played great," UNLV head coach Jennifer Klein said. "We came out and stuck to our game plan. We gave up a goal to tie the match, but I thought we responded great by coming back and scoring three more (goals)."
The win improved the Rebels' record to 11-7-1 this season, and advanced them to the semifinals for the eighth time in the 12-year history of the conference. Utah meanwhile ended its season at 5-15-1.
Senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro, named first team all-conference on Tuesday, scored the game's first goal just under seven minutes in, as she chipped a shot over the charging Utah goalie. The score, coming in the 7th minute, was the 14th of the season for Shoughro, extending her current school record, and also extended her UNLV career goal mark to 27. Amanda Forrester assisted on the score.
Utah would tie the game in the 16th minute thanks to a goal from Lauren Hair, as she took in a pass from Leslie Muirhead and chipped in a pass over the defense on a breakaway. UNLV took control of the game over the final 16 minutes of the first half, starting with a penalty kick goal from LaChere Anglin, her second score of the year off a PK. That goal, coming in the 30th minute, put the Rebels up by a 2-1 margin. Junior Elizabeth Billington added to the lead for UNLV thanks to her first career goal, a shot from 15 yards out to the lower right corner of the net. That made the score 3-1 in the 39th minute. Jenn Wolfe was credited with the assist.
The game's final goal came in the closing minutes, with Colette Jepson scoring on a breakaway into the right corner in the 88th minute, with the assist going to Brittney Flores for a 4-1 UNLV edge.
Utah actually finished the game with a 16-15 edge on shots, though shots on goal was 7-4 in favor of UNLV. Utah also took the only corner kick of the contest. Kylie Wassell finished with three saves in goal for UNLV, and Hannah Turpen posted three saves and four goals allowed for the Utes.
