LAS VEGAS -
The UNLV women's track and field team travels to the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at Albuquerque Convention Center on March 25-27, and being hosted by the University of New Mexico. The multi-event athletes in the heptathlon and pentathlon got started today, while the majority of the meet starts Friday.
The Rebels will be looking to several student-athletes to score points at the conference meet, paced by freshman Emily Blok, who has two of the fastest times in the league in a pair of events. Blok has clocked a time of 7.65 in the 60 meters, which is the seventh-best time in the MWC, and also has added a time of 25.04 in the 200, the 10th-best time in the league. Fellow sprinter Shahnel Woodley will also be in the running to score points for the Rebels in the 60 and 200 meters as well.
Another freshman to watch is Kelsey Williamson, who has posted the sixth-best time in the 400 meters entering the conference meet, and the rookie could also be a factor in the 200 meters as well. Elsewhere on the track, senior Bailey Kuestermeyer will be in the mix to score points in both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters, and two weeks ago she cruised to the second-fastest 5k time in school history with a 17:19.12, which is 11th in the league this season. She also has the eighth-fastest time in the 3,000 meters in the MWC this year, clocking a time of 10:03.05.
In the field events Deja Edwards (triple jump) and Amanda Bingson (weight throw) are both threats to reach the podium this weekend. Edwards has the seventh-best distance in the triple by a MWC student-athlete. Also, the 4x400 meter relay team and the distance medley team should perform well.
"The team has worked very hard to prepare for this weekend," UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams said. "They are going into the meet hungry and excited. It will take an overall team effort to help us move up in our conference standings, but I am confident that we can get it done."
The Rebels are looking to improve off of last year's eighth-place finish, in which they were just 10 points away from sixth and 17 from breaking into the top five. The BYU women's team won the 2009 MWC Indoor title, with TCU coming in second and Colorado State third.
