LAS VEGAS - After seeing Saturday's match postponed because of rain, the UNLV men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive outing, 4-3 over UC Riverside, on Super Bowl Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels improved to 5-1 while the Highlanders, who are coached by former UNLV head coach York Strother, fell to 3-2. The Rebels' match vs. Southern Miss, which was originally supposed to be played today, will not be played.

Using a reshuffled lineup, the hosts began by winning the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. Attila Toth and Matthew Kunkel won 8-5 at the top spot and Charlie Alvarado and Kasper Konyves prevailed by the same score on court three.

In singles, UNLV picked up three quick wins to clinch the team match. Super sophomore Mehdi Bouras won 6-4, 6-2 over John Park at No. 1; freshman Bernard Schoeman won 6-1, 6-4 over Sean Peterson at No. 5; and Alvarado, also a rookie, won 6-4, 6-2 over Ryan Stanburg at the bottom of the lineup.

The visitors then won the remaining three matches for their points.

"It was great to see some of our freshmen come through when we weren't at full strength," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "I'm glad we were able to get two of the three matches in, and it's always nice to finish the weekend on a winning note."

UNLV is next in action on Friday when it hosts Idaho beginning with doubles at 2 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
