LOS ANGELES - The UNLV Rebels (20-12) dropped a 7-1 contest to the red-hot Loyola Marymount Lions (12-11) Friday afternoon in Los Angeles. The Lions extended their season-best winning streak to nine games with the victory at Smith Field. UNLV scattered eight hits in the game, but was unable to manufacture more than one run. The Rebels left nine stranded on the bases with six in scoring position. LMU, on the other hand, notched 10 hits and scored seven times, while leaving seven on the bases.
After watching UNLV maroon two runners in the top of the second, LMU made sure to get its share across home plate with five hits after two outs had been recorded in the bottom half of the inning. Darcy Pagnini and Priscilla Satete began the four-run offensive with singles before the second out had been recorded. Jennifer Nayudu then delivered a single to left that should have loaded the bases, but a fielding error by Paige Emerson in center allowed Kylie Ahlo, who was pinch-running for Pagnini, to score the game's first run. Danielle Smith then singled to join Satete and Nayudu on the base paths before a three-run double by Amy Charpentier closed out the scoring.
UNLV got one run back off three hits in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1. Kylie Wagner began the inning with a double off the base of the wall in center and came around to score on the first of two singles by Tara Bendt on the day. Jaci Hull pushed Bendt to second with a single of her own, but a fielder's choice ground out ended the inning.
The Lions answered back quickly with three runs in the fifth. Sam Fischer opened the inning with a home run to deep center off a Jessica O'Connor (9-4) offering. J.J. Hartung stepped up later with runners in scoring position and hit a two-run single to right to cap the game's scoring.
Melissa Dykema (8-6) notched the win for LMU in 4.2 innings of work. Dykema was touched for one run on six hits. She struck out three and walked one.
Molly Medeiros picked up her first save of 2010 in 2.1 innings of relief. Medeiros closed out the Rebels' fifth inning and surrendered only two hits on the day. She walked two, but struck out one.
O'Connor was saddled with the loss in five innings of a start. She allowed all seven runs (five earned) on nine hits. She struck out four for the 10th time this season and issued one walk.
UNLV is back in action Saturday afternoon (March 27) with a 1:00 pm doubleheader at #5/6 UCLA.
