Final Stats
PROVO, Utah - The UNLV Rebels (26-17 overall, 3-2 Mountain West) lost a 7-3 decision to the BYU Cougars (30-9, 5-1 MWC) Thursday night at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah. UNLV jumped out to a 3-0 lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings before BYU rallied with seven unanswered tallies off of two home runs to claim the contest.
With the game knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, BYU got a walk and a double to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Andrea Ramirez was then intentionally walked by Traci Odegard (5-8) to load the bases before Kylie Wagner was brought back into the game to pitch. Caschjen Davis-Atagi then quickly ended the game with a line drive homer down the line in left for a grand slam.
The teams combined to leave nine runners on the bases before UNLV scored the game's first run in the fourth. Ashli Holland led off the stanza with a walk issued by Paige Affleck before moving over to third on an error by BYU's J.C. Clayton on a grounder by Tayler Aleman, who advanced to second on the play. Wagner helped her own cause by hitting an RBI-single to left to plate Holland.
UNLV notched two more scores in the fifth off hits by Holland and Aleman. Jaci Hull started the inning being hit by a pitch and taking second on a passed ball. Hull moved to third on a groundout by Kendall Fearn and then scored on Holland's single. Aleman then smashed a double to the gap in right-center to bring Holland around from first.
BYU rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth off a three-run homer by Angie Quiocho.
In all, the teams combined to leave 18 runners on the bases with UNLV owning 11. Seven of UNLV's 11 were stranded in scoring position when the innings ended.
Odegard (5-8) was saddled with the loss in 1.2 innings of relief. She allowed three runs on hits and walked three.
Wagner earned a no-decision in 4.1 combined inning pitched. She was touched for four runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking two.
Christie Zinanti (7-1) earned the win in two innings of relief for BYU. Zinanti struck out four and gave up only one hit.
Affleck started the contest for the Cougars, but was pulled after five innings of work. Affleck surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out five, but walked three.
The Rebels are back in action Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm MT (3:00 pm PT) in Salt Lake City, Utah when they face the Utah Utes.
