SAN DIEGO - The 71st-ranked UNLV men's tennis team started strong in doubles play but ultimately fell 4-3 to No. 62 San Diego State to end both teams' regular season at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Rebels dropped to 12-11 overall and finished 2-4 in the league while SDSU improved to 11-12 overall but 5-1 in the MWC.
The visitors took two of three doubles matches to open a 1-0 lead. Mehdi Bouras and Luca Barlocchi downed Achim Vladimirschii and Giovanni Vaglietti 8-6 at the top of the lineup before Kasper Konyves and Attila Toth clinched it with an 8-5 victory over Andre Feliz and Tim Shulz van Endert on court three.
The Aztecs rebounded in singles play, winning the first three completed matches. Johannes Markel then rallied to down Luis Rattenhuber 0-6, 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot to bring UNLV to within a point but SDSU clinched the overall win on court two. Toth closed the scoring at No. 3 by winning a super-tiebreaker over Vaglietti, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
The Rebels will now prepare to host next week's MWC Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, which starts Wednesday. Complete tournament details are scheduled to be released by Monday.
