ST. GEORGE, Utah - The UNLV Rebels (23-14) used the long ball in their 6-4 win over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (12-22) Saturday afternoon in St. George, Utah. In all, UNLV cranked five home runs with three coming in the decisive fifth inning. Jaci Hull was responsible for two of the home runs, which helped moved her into a first-place tie in UNLV's career charts with former Rebel Kim Rondina (1994-97), as both now own 46 apiece.
Hull gave UNLV its first lead of the game with a solo shot to right off of Sammy Rodriguez (7-10) in the first.
Bakersfield answered with a two-run shot of its own by Jill McClelland that also scored Karlee Rodgers, who initially reached on a single.
After a scoreless third inning, Kendall Fearn nailed a solo shot to left to knot the game up at 2-2.
UNLV then added four runs in the fifth to push out to a 6-2 lead. Tayler Aleman led off the frame with a blast to left, while Marissa Nichols had a dinger of her own two batters later. The home runs forced the Roadrunners to summon Ryane Petersen to the circle in relief of Rodriguez. Petersen was quickly greeted by a single from Tara Bendt before Hull smashed a two-run blast to left-center to cap the four-run frame.
The Roadrunners got two runs back in the sixth off a two-run homer by Kristen Archuleta off of Traci Odegard (5-5). Petersen reached scored on the hit after an error. Jessica O'Connor was then brought into the game and shut down the Roadrunner offense.
Odegard picked up the win in five innings of work. She was touched for four runs (three earned) on nine hits. She struck out two and walked one.
O'Connor notched her second save of the season and sixth of her career. The six saves are good enough for fourth place in the program's record book, as she ties Jacque Kerrigan's (2002-05)
The Rebels are back in action next Friday, April 9 (6:00 pm), with their Mountain West Conference home opener against the Colorado State Rams. The contest will be the first at Eller Media Stadium for the squad in a month.
