LAS VEGAS - The 36th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team earned an at-large bid and is headed to an NCAA Regional for the fourth straight season and seventh time in the last nine years as the championship bracket was released on Tuesday.
The Lady Rebels (21-4 after last week's Mountain West Conference tournament), who set a school record for highest winning percentage during the regular season (.869), will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face 25th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth (20-4) on Friday, May 14, beginning at 7 a.m. PT. The following day, the winner of that match will take on the winner of second-ranked host North Carolina (26-4), an at-large choice from the Atlantic Coast Conference, vs. Richmond (8-10), which won an automatic bid from the Atlantic 10.
Champions of the regionals will advance to the NCAA Round of 16, which will be played May 20 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
This marks the first time in half a decade that the Lady Rebels will play their first-round match outside of the state of California and the first time ever east of the Mississippi River.
VCU, which earned an auto bid by winning the Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship, is no stranger to UNLV as the two teams met in Las Vegas in both 2008 and '09, with the Rams earning a 4-3 victory both times.
"Traveling a long distance in the NCAAs will be a new experience for us," 11th-year UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "This is a great opportunity to play a top 25 team in the first round and we are really looking forward to the challenge."
The NCAA will release the fields for the singles and doubles championship tournaments on Wednesday.
