TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 12 UNLV men's golf team shot the low round of the second day with a 13-under 271 on Friday and moved up two spots into second place at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club (par 71, 7,144 yards).
UNLV's second-round score tied the championship record for lowest single round. The Rebels also posted a 13-under 271 during the second round of the 2009 MWC Men's Golf Championship.
The Rebels have a 36-hole total of 7-under 561 and trail tournament-leader Colorado State by four shots. The Rams are at 11-under 557 after a second-round 10-under 274. San Diego State is third at 6-under, BYU is fourth at 2-under and defending champion TCU rounds out the top five at 23-over. Air Force is sixth at 28-over, followed by New Mexico at 32-over, Wyoming at 34-over and Utah at 41-over.
Colorado State's Ryan Peterson leads the field individually at 7-under 135 after shooting a second-round 6-under 65. San Diego State's Tom Berry is one shot back in second place at 6-under. Berry also shot 6-under 65 on Friday. UNLV's Derek Ernst is third at 3-under 139 after shooting 2-under 69 during the second round.
There is a six-way tie for fourth place at 2-under, which includes UNLV's Eddie Olson. Olson, who won the 2008 MWC Championship, shot 7-under 64 on Friday, which was the low round of the tournament so far. His 64 also tied the MWC Championship record for lowest single round held by Steve Saunders of New Mexico and Martin Laird of Colorado State, who both collected scores of 64 in 2009 and 2004, respectively.
On Friday, Ernst bogeyed the second hole, then had five birdies in an 11-hole span, before bogeying the 17th and 18th holes. Olson had nine birdies on the day with two bogeys.
Other Rebel scores: Kevin Penner is tied for 10th at 1-under 141 after a second-round 3-under 68, Colby Smith is also tied for 10th after a second-round 1-under 70 and Brett Kanda is in 38th at 12-over 154 after a second-round 7-over 78.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday with play beginning at 7 a.m. PDT. UNLV will be in the third and final wave of the day, which also includes Colorado State and San Diego State, and will begin play at 8:30 a.m. PDT.
