CEDAR CITY, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - Seniors Ashleigh Shoughro and Amanda Forrester each posted a pair of goals to lead the UNLV women's soccer team to a 6-1 exhibition victory at Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon.
The day's first goal actually came from sophomore Macy Jo Harrison, who took a pass from Colette Jepson and one-timed a shot to the right corner for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Shoughro added to the lead in the 26th minute when she headed into the goal a corner kick from Harrison to the top left corner. Less then a minute later, Shoughro helped UNLV go up by three scores as she was credited with an assist on Forrester's first score of the game, a shot from 18-yards out into the left corner in the 27th minute.
Southern Utah put itself on the scoreboard in the 44th minute when Shelby Ostler collected the ball after a header was blocked in the box, and scored from short range to make the edge 3-1 in favor of the Rebels. There would be no rally by the home team though, as Brittany Flores scored just 47 seconds after the start of the second half when she blasted in the rebound of a saved shot by teammate Sarah Naranjo. The day's last two goals were unassisted scores by Shoughro in the 71st minute and Forrester in the 72nd.
Starting in goal was Ashlee Dela Cruz for UNLV, and she posted three saves while allowing one goal. Kylie Wassell and Kelli McCracken split time in goal for UNLV in the second half.
The Rebels will play their second and final exhibition game of the preseason on Tuesday, Aug. 17 against Dixie State at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
