LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Cal State Northridge's Brittanie Sakajian scored midway through the second half for the lone goal of the game, sending the UNLV women's soccer team to its first home setback of the season, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The loss dropped UNLV to 5-2, while the Matadors improved to 4-3 for the season.
Playing in the final game of the UNLV Nike Classic, the Rebels were the aggressors in the first half, taking nine shots to three for the visitors. However, CSUN goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo was strong in goal, coming up with four saves in the opening 45 minutes to help keep the game scoreless at the break. Shots were more even in the second half, with UNLV holding a slight 5-4 edge.
The winning score came in the 64th minute for CSUN, as Alexis Barbara sent in a long cross from the right side. Sakajian came in on the left side, and connected on a short header right at the goalline to knock in the ball past Rebel keeper Kylie Wassell for the goal.
UNLV finished with a 14-7 edge on shots, and 7-5 advantage on shots on goal. The Rebels also took seven corner kicks to one for CSUN. Wassell finished with three saves in goal for UNLV, while Jacobo posted seven for the Matadors.
UNLV remains in Las Vegas for its next action, as it will host the UNLV Rebel Classic on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 19 at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels will face Long Beach State on Friday night at 7 pm, followed by a Sunday afternoon contest against UC Davis at 1 pm.
