LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team is in sixth place at 7-over-par 583 after the first day of play at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which is being held at the Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course (par 72, 7,363 yards). The Rebels turned in scores of 5-over 293 and 2-over 290 on Sunday and are 10 shots behind team-leading Colorado-Colorado Springs.
UCCS shot an opening-round 8-under 280, then shot 5-over 293 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 3-under 573. San Diego is in second place at even par, while New Mexico State is third at 1-over. Wyoming is in fourth at 4-over, while Colorado State rounds out the top five at 6-over. Host Air Force is seventh at 11-over, four shots behind UNLV.
Colorado State's Ryan Peterson has a two-shot lead on the individual field as he opened the tournament with a 3-under 69 and a 4-under 68 for a total of 7-under 137. UCCS' Chris Shoop is second at 5-under.
UNLV junior Derek Ernst, a third-team All-America and the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Year last season, leads all Rebel players at 2-under 142 and is in a three-way tie for fifth place, five shots off the lead. Ernst shot an opening-round even-par 72 and a second-round 2-under 70. Senior Jeremiah Wooding is the other Rebel in the top 20 as he is in an eight-way tie for 19th at 2-over. Wooding shot 76 and 70 on Sunday.
Other Rebels: sophomore Kevin Penner is tied for 27th at 3-over 147 (72-75), junior Colby Smith is tied for 37th at 4-over 148 (73-75) and freshman Blake Biddle is tied for 69th at 9-over 153 (76-77).
The 18-team, 104-individual tournament will conclude on Monday with 18 holes. Play will begin at 8 a.m. MDT.
