LAS VEGAS - After holding UC Irvine scoreless over the first 50 minutes, the UNLV men's soccer team saw the 18th-ranked Anteaters post four goals in a 20-minute span to earn a 4-0 win over the Rebels in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Though UCI (7-1) held an 8-2 edge on shots in the first half, UNLV (3-5) played strong defense to keep the game tied at 0-0, with Rebel goalkeeper Ryan Harding coming up with three key saves in the opening 45 minutes. He then made two more impressive saves in the first five minutes of the second half, but after stopping the first of Amani Walker's two point blank shots in the 51st minute, he was unable to recover the rebound and Walker quickly sent the ball back in for the day's first score, putting UCI up 1-0.
The lead would increase to 2-0 in the 58th minute when Spencer Thompson took on a defender before quickly sending a shot through Harding to the back of the goal. Walker would record his second goal of the afternoon on a penalty kick in the 64th minute, and Syd Tom ended the scoring in the 70th minute on a shot from the top of the box. Walker also assisted on that score.
UCI held a 19-6 edge on shots, and 9-3 on shots on goal. The Anteaters also held a 10-1 edge on corner kicks. Harding finished with five saves in the net for UNLV, while Andrew Fontein posted three to earn the shutout.
UNLV returns to action on Friday, opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at New Mexico in a 6 pm (PT) contest.
