LAS VEGAS - UNLV swept the Mountain West Conference weekly women's soccer awards, as Ashleigh Shoughro was named Offensive Player of the Week and Caitlin Allen was named Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday. This is the second honor of the season for Shoughro and fourth in her career, while Allen receives her first career honor.
Shoughro, a senior forward and native of Las Vegas, posted seven points over the weekend in leading UNLV to a pair of wins in the Air Force Invitational. Against VMI on Sept. 24, Shoughro scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added a pair of assists in the 5-0 win. She then assisted on the game-winning goal in the Rebels' 1-0 victory over Weber State on Sunday. She currently leads the conference in goals with nine and points with 21.
Allen, a sophomore defender from San Diego, Calif., was a key member of the Rebel defensive backline that posted back-to-back shutouts. UNLV held WMI to just three total shots, while Weber State was limited to a total of two shots on goal over 90 minutes of play.
The Rebels, winners of eight games by end of September for the second-time ever, will open MWC play on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 pm against New Mexico at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
