Rally Falls Short For Rebels

DENVER (UNLVRebels.com) - Drake (3-0) scored two first-half goals and held off a rally by UNLV (3-1) to hand the Rebels their first loss of the season. 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Denver Invitational.

UNLV fell behind less then 10 minutes into the game when the Rebels were called for a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick, which Megan Fisher converted for a 1-0 Drake lead at the 8:58 mark. Right before the end of the half the lead increased to two when Fisher sent a free kick to Paige Dusek, who sent in a shot over Rebel goalkeeper Kylie Wassell and into the goal to for a 2-0 edge.

The Rebels got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute when senior Amanda Forrester notched her second goal of the year on a shot from the top of the box, closing UNLV within 2-1. But despite a 13-1 edge on shots in the second half, UNLV could not find the tying score on the way to its first loss of the season.

UNLV finished with a 24-5 edge on shots, and 9-2 on shots on goal. The Rebels also held a 13-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Rebels will return to action on Monday, taking on Colorado in the consolation game of the Denver Invitational at 9 am.
