Day 1 Results - Cherry & Silver Invitational in PDF Format
The UNLV Rebels opened up their 2011 indoor track and field season by having two newcomers rewrite the program's record book in their first time out for the scarlet and gray. Chelsea Cassulo and Ashley Henry came up big for UNLV in the weight throw and high jump, respectively, giving the Rebels an impressive showing at New Mexico's Cherry & Silver Invitational hosted at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Cassulo, a junior transfer from Lompoc, Calif., produced a weight throw of 64-08.00 (19.71m) to top the mark set of 59-07.5 by Monique Humprhries in 2008. Las Vegas native Amanda Bingson followed closely behind with a throw of 63-05.00 (19.33m). Both distances rank as the best in the Mountain West Conference thus far in 2011.
Henry, a freshman from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., finished fourth in the high jump with a measurement of 5-10.00 (1.78m). The jump, which was the best since Christine Spence's effort in 2005, ties her for first place in UNLV's record book for the indoor event.
Cassulo, Bingson and Henry's efforts set NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Emily Blok, a sophomore from Conifer, Colo., ran a personal best time of 24.86 in the 200m. Kelsey Williamson (25.26) and Lindsay Roach (25.42) competed in the 200m with noteworthy times, as well.
Christine Lowe, Brett Zorich and Laura Affeld made the top five in UNLV's records in the 600m. Lowe became the third-fastest runner in the program's history with a 1:37.32, while Zorich (1:39.11) and Affeld (1:39.58) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Day two of the Cherry & Silver Invitational will take place Saturday in the Duke City. Tomorrow's track schedule includes the 60m, 400m, 800m, 3000m, 60m Hurdles and the 4x400m Relay, while the shot put and triple jump will be contested in the field events.
