Wassell Honored For Shutout Performances

Oct. 24, 2011

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Wassell has been named the Mountain West Women's Soccer Co-Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Rebels to two road shutouts this past weekend, the league office announced on Monday. It's the first second honor for Wassell, and the third by a Rebel this season.

Wassell, a Las Vegas native, did not allow a goal in 200 minutes of action in games at Air Force and Wyoming. In a 1-0 win at Air Force on Oct. 21, she faced 15 shots and posted five saves. She posted the exact same numbers (15 shots faced, five saves) on Sunday in Laramie, though this time the result was in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Wyoming. The back-to-back shutouts give her five for the year, and it was the third straight shutout as a team for the Rebels. Wassell also has a personal shutout streak of 354.27 minutes, dating back to the first half of the New Mexico game on Oct. 8.

UNLV (7-8-3, 3-1-1 MWC), currently tied for second place in the Mountain West with San Diego State, finishes the regular season against the Aztecs on Friday at 4:30 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The game is part of a doubleheader with the UNLV men, who play San Jose State at 7 pm, and all tickets are just $1.
