LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Despite a large shot disadvantage, San Jose State was able to convert its six shots into two scores to escape with a 2-1 win over UNLV in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Friday night at Peter Johann Field.

UNLV (3-12, 2-6 MPSF) finished the night with a 20-6 edge on shots, including 11-3 in the first half, but struggled on getting the ball to the back of the net. The Spartans (8-5-3, 5-3) meanwhile not only survived the Rebels' offensive attack, but would go up 1-0 in the 23rd minute thanks to a score by Nick Cashmere from a few yards out off an assist from Craig Hertler.

Steve Sanchez added to the lead for SJSU when he drove into the box and blasted a shot to the right post, putting the visitors up 2-0 in the 68th minute. Roberto Casteneda assisted on the goal. UNLV got on the scoreboard in the 77th minute thanks to Jonny Espinoza, who was able to draw a penalty kick after being taken out in the box by SJSU goalie Jonathan Lester on a breakaway. Espinoza would take the PK and converted for his third goal of the year, cutting the lead to 2-1. With new life, UNLV kept up the attack, but was unable to solve the Spartan defense.

Lester finished the night with five saves, while Ryan Harding made three for the Rebels. UNLV also held an 8-2 edge on corner kicks for the night.

UNLV closes out its home schedule with a Senior Day contest on Sunday at 1 pm against Sacramento State.
