UNLV Defeats Grand Canyon, 83-66

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Justin Hawkins scored a career-high 25 points and Mike Moser had 16 points and 20 rebounds in his UNLV debut as the Runnin' Rebels opened the season with an 83-66 win Friday against Grand Canyon.

UNLV, playing its first game under coach Dave Rice, secured the win with a 15-4 run that increased its lead to 70-53 with about 7 minutes remaining. Hawkins tallied seven points during the run and 17 in the second half.

Grand Canyon, a Division II school, was led by reserves Braylon Pickrel with 19 points and Blake Davis with 13.

Moser was playing his first game for the Runnin' Rebels after sitting out last year as a transfer from UCLA. He had nine points and 10 rebounds in the first half, including a jumper at the buzzer that gave the Runnin' Rebels a 39-38 lead. His 20 rebounds is the most for a UNLV player in a game since 2005.

Quintrell Thomas added 12 points for UNLV, while Oscar Bellfield had 12 points and six assists.
