LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV saw a school-record three players voted to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII Women's Soccer, the organization of sport information directors (CoSIDA) announced on Friday. Caitlin Allen, Courtney Botelho and Kylie Wassell were all named to the second team, marking the first time UNLV has ever had more then one player named in a single year.
Allen, a junior and native of San Diego, Calif., is a repeat selection after earning third team honors a year ago. Allen is the team's leader on the defensive backline that has posted seven shutouts and a 0.94 team GAA. She also scored one goal on the year in a win over Boise State, and added an assist on Wednesday in the Rebels' Mountain West Tournament win over Boise State. Allen, a two-time Academic All-MWC honoree while also twice making the dean's list, currently carries a cumulative GPA of 3.51 with a major in environmental studies.
Botelho, from Molilani, Hawaii, is a sophomore midfielder that has played in all 20 games this year with 16 starts, and is tied for first on the team and second in the conference with five assists, while she's also scored one goal this season. An Academic All-MW honoree in 2010, she holds a cumulative GPA of 3.82 with a major in kinesiology.
Wassell, a sophomore and Las Vegas native, has been the Rebels' starting goalkeeper for the past two seasons, and has posted 74 saves and six shutouts this season to go along with a 0.95 GAA. She was named MW Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24 after consecutive shutouts on the road at Air Force and Wyoming. A secondary education major, Wassell currently holds a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District teams. District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
