SANTA BARBARA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (13-8) returned to their winning ways with a 2-0 blanking of the San Diego Toreros (7-7) Saturday afternoon at the Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara, Calif. UNLV's offense was powered by two solo home runs, while quality pitching and defense kept USD off of the scoreboard.
Ashli Holland put the Rebels up for good with a lead-off homer in the first, while Tayler Aleman added an insurance run with a solo blast in the fourth.
Amanda Oliveto (10-3) picked up her 10th win of the season in complete-game fashion. Oliveto has now thrown two shutouts and nine complete games this season. Against USD, she struck out five against two walks and five hits.
The teams combined to leave 15 runners on the bases, as UNLV owned seven to USD's eight. The Rebels had four of their seven stranded in scoring position when the third out was recorded, while the Toreros had six of eight. USD left the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings, but was unable to capitalize on its opportunities.
Kaitlin Healy fell to 3-2 on the year in four innings of work after she allowed both runs and three hits to UNLV and walked four, as well. Cassidy Coleman tossed the final three frames of relief for USD and struck out five and surrendered one hit.
UNLV returns to action Sunday morning with a pair of games to close out its stay at the Gaucho Classic II. The Rebels face Wisconsin at 9:30 am, prior to a 11:45 contest against UC Santa Barbara.
Note: Holland moved into a sixth-place tie in UNLV's career record book for RBI Saturday. She is tied with Julie Crandall (1995-98) with 121 apiece.
