LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a second-round 5-over-par 293 on Saturday to move into a tie for seventh place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, which is being played at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).
California took over the team lead with a second-round 12-under 276 and leads the field by six shots at 6-under 570 after 36 holes. First-round leader Texas A&M is now second after a second-round 8-over. The Aggies are at even-par for the tournament. Oklahoma State is third at 4-over, UCLA is fourth at 8-over and Georgia Tech rounds out the top five at 12-over. Arizona State is sixth at 19-over, while the Rebels are tied with Duke at 20-over 596.
Individually, Texas A&M's Jordan Russell maintained the lead after a second-round 1-under 71. He leads the rest of the field by two shots at 9-under 135 after 36 holes. Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann is second at 7-under and California's Stephen Hale is third at 6-under. Both Hoffmann and Hale shot 4-under on Saturday.
UNLV senior Jeremiah Wooding leads all Rebels and is in a tie for 15th at 3-over 147 after a second-round 2-under 70. Other Rebels counting toward the team score: junior Derek Ernst shot a second-round 3-over 75 and is tied for 24th at 5-over 149, freshman Blake Biddle shot 4-over Saturday and is 6-over for the tournament in a tie for 31st, junior Colby Smith is also tied for 31st after a second-round even-par 72, and sophomore Kevin Penner was 5-over 77 on Saturday after withdrawing after four holes during the first round.
Three UNLV golfers are competing as individuals only: sophomore Arthur Kim was 8-over on Saturday and is tied for 67th at 13-over, freshman Nicholas Maruri was 5-over Saturday and is tied for 69th at 14-over, and freshman Max Kraemer was 9-over during the second round and is 76th at 26-over.
The 15-team, 80-individual tournament features 11 of the nation's top-30 teams according to the GolfStat rankings. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with 18 holes starting at 8 a.m. The public is welcome to attend the tournament and admission is free.
