LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - In the first-ever meeting between the women's tennis teams from UNLV and Ole Miss, the 38th-ranked host Rebels lost to the 45th-ranked visiting Rebels 4-3 on a warm and windy Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
UNLV's Lady Rebels, who are coached by former Ole Miss assistant Kevin Cory, fell to 11-4 on the year while the Southeastern Conference version improved to 7-5.
UNLV began the morning by winning two of three doubles matches to capture the team point. Lucia Batta and Anna Maskaljun downed Gabby Rangel and Connor Vogel 8-5 at the second spot while Adrienn Hidvegi and Jana Albers downed Vivian Vlaar and Caroline Rohde-Moe by the same score on court three.
In singles play, Ole Miss came roaring back to take three straight-set victories. UNLV got its points out of Aleksandra Josifoska, who downed Rohde-Moe 6-2, 6-3 at the second position, and Maskaljun, who improved to 14-1 in dual matches as a senior with 6-3, 6-2 win over Rangel on court six.
Eventually sitting all square at 3, the match came down to the only three-setter of the day. Sophomore Nives Pavlovic emerged with the lead after taking a first-set tiebreaker, but ultimately fell to Laura van de Stroet in excruciating fashion, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
Having now closed out non-conference play for the season, UNLV is off until hosting Wyoming on April 1 starting at 10 a.m.
