On Deck: The UNLV Rebels step into Mountain West Conference play after spending the first eight weeks of 2011 facing non-conference competition. UNLV opens up league action with its annual Rocky Mountain expedition at Colorado State (April 8) and New Mexico (April 9-10).
Looking Back A Weekend: The UNLV Rebels went 2-2 at Cal Poly's Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif. UNLV won its first and last games of the tournament with two losses in between the victories.
Last Friday (March 25), the Rebels knocked off Fairfield by a 6-2 score, but dropped its first contest against then-#15/16 Oregon 11-3. Oregon got the best of UNLV, 8-4, once again, on Saturday (March 26) in a rain-shortened game that was called in the fifth inning. The Rebels turned things around the tournament's final game with a 3-0 win over Cal Poly, which featured the first no-hitter thrown by a UNLV hurler (Amanda Oliveto) in over 16 years.
Offensively, UNLV was led by three players that amassed at least four hits on the weekend. Ashli Holland topped the squad with seven hits, while Stefany Valentino (five) and Kylie Wagner (four) followed closely behind.
Holland led the team in numerous categories, including average (.538), doubles (2), triples (1), home runs (2), RBI (4), total bases (17), slugging (1.308) and on-base percentages (.571).
Valentino and Wagner weren't too shabby in their own right, as they hit .455 and .444, respectively.
In the circle, Oliveto went 2-1 with an ERA of 2.67 in 18.1 innings of work. She pitched UNLV to victories against Fairfield and Cal Poly, while she suffered a loss to Oregon.
Oh No, Oliveto Threw A No-No: Amanda Oliveto became the fifth pitcher in UNLV softball history to toss a no-hitter when she went the distance in a complete-game shutout of the Cal Poly Mustangs (March 27).
She joined the sisterhood of Karen Carlson, Kim Smith, Lori Harrigan and Amie Stewart as the only pitchers in Rebel lore to throw a no-no. In all, her outing was the 12th no-hitter for UNLV and the first since Stewart's against Massachusetts' on Feb. 18, 1995 (an 8-0 UNLV win).
Oliveto improved to 13-5 with the win, as she held the Mustang offense in-check. She struck out eight for the third straight outing and sixth time overall this season. Besides the strikeouts, she induced 12 ground ball outs and one fly out. She allowed only four base runners in the game, as she walked one, hit one and two reached via error.
