ALBUQUERQUE (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (20-14 overall, 2-1 MWC) suffered their first loss in Mountain West Conference action Sunday with a 2-1 setback to the New Mexico Lobos (15-17, 1-2) Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field in Albuquerque.
The Lobos jumped out early with two scores in the first inning with help from three singles and a walk. Kaity Ingram and Kerry Hodgins connected on back-to-back singles to begin the contest before Jessica Garcia joined the pair on the bases after a base-on-balls issued by Amanda Oliveto (17-6). Danielle Castro then stepped up and delivered the big hit of the inning with a single up the middle to score Ingram and Hodgins.
The two runs were all that UNM's Kaela DeBroeck (8-10) needed as she held the UNLV offense in-check throughout the contest. DeBroeck allowed only two hits to the Rebels and forced them to strand three runners on the bases.
All three of those runners left behind were in the second inning when DeBroeck walked Kylie Wagner, allowed a single to Tayler Van Acker and walked Pauline Monreal. Unfortunately, the Rebels could not do anything offensively, as the next three batters struck out.
Wagner cut the deficit in half in the fourth with a solo home run that landed in the right-field bleachers.
The loss snapped UNLV's 13-game winning streak in the head-to-head series that dated back to the 2007 season. It was the first win by the Lobos over the Rebels in Albuquerque since April 13, 2007.
DeBroeck went the distance for her eighth win of the season. She allowed one run on two hits, struck out five and walked two.
Oliveto was stuck with the loss in six innings of work. She was touched for two runs off of five hits. She fanned five, but walked two.
Note: Stefany Valentino's season/career-best hitting streak was snapped in Sunday's game at 12.
