LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 52nd-ranked UNLV men's tennis team broke a three-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Utah on a very un-Vegas-like cold, gloomy April Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Somehow escaping the rain/snow storm that was rolling around the valley, the Rebels improved to 13-9 overall and evened their record at 2-2 in Mountain West Conference play. The Utes fell to 6-12 (0-3).
UNLV swept three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. Mehdi Bouras and Johannes Markel nipped Alejandro Medinilla and Benito Suriano 9-7 at the top of the lineup; Rene Ruegamer and Bernard Schoeman got by Matt Cowley and Garrett LaBarre 8-7 at No. 2; and Kasper Konyves and Alex Bull teamed up for a 9-7 win over Devin Lane and Dmytro Mamedov on court three.
In singles, Bouras continued his outstanding senior season as the nation's 58th-ranked player quickly defeated Suriano 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 position to remain perfect in league play. Tamas Batyi swept Mamedov 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2; Ruegamer clinched it with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Medinilla at No. 4; and Charlie Alvarado scored the hosts' final point with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over LaBarre on court six.
The Rebels are now off until their final regular-season road match of the season when they take on TCU in Forth Worth on April 17.
