Final Stats
ALBUQUERQUE (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (20-13 overall, 2-0 MWC) breezed by the New Mexico Lobos (14-17, 0-2) with three unanswered runs in their 3-1 victory at Lobo Field. The win was the sixth straight by UNLV in the head-to-head series in Albuquerque and 13th consecutive overall between the two programs.
The conditions were not the best for the teams to play in as wind gusts were reported to be above 40 mph and blow from left field to right.
UNM jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with its only score in the second inning. Dani Castro led off the frame with a single to left and moseyed over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stefanie Carramusa. Castro then scored on a fielding error by Ashli Holland on a grounder by Chelsea Anaya hit to second base.
UNLV countered with two runs of its own off of three hits in the fourth. Jaexie Balilea was credited with the first RBI when she drilled a triple to the fence in right-center. Amber Petersen scored from third on Balilea's three-bagger after she was inserted to pinch-run following a single by Kylie Wagner. Petersen moved around the base path with help from a sacrifice bunt by Tayler Van Acker and a fly out by Pauline Monreal. After a walk to Rayna Bradshaw, Stefany Valentino singled through the right side to plate Balilea with the would-be winning run.
Valentino's single extended her season/career-best hitting streak to 12 games.
The Rebels added an insurance run in the fifth to stretch their lead to two runs. Tayler Aleman led off with a single through the left side and took second on a sacrifice bunt placed by Wagner. Van Acker followed with a single to center that was misplayed by UNM centerfielder Kerry Hodgins and allowed Aleman to score.
Amanda Oliveto (17-5) picked up the win in complete-game fashion after she allowed one run on five hits. She struck out six against one walk.
Kari Gutierrez (6-7) was saddled with the loss in seven-innings of work. Gutierrez was touched for three runs off of nine hits. She struck out two and walked two, as well.
UNLV is back in action Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm MST (12:00 pm PST) against the New Mexico Lobos. The game will complete the first weekend of conference action for both teams.
Notes: Ashli Holland moved up in one category of UNLV's career record book after today's game ... She is now eighth in total bases (298).
