May 19, 2011

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 2009-12 USA Basketball Women's National Team and a pair of hopefuls attended a training camp held on May 10-12 at the home of the UNLV Women's Basketball team in Cox Pavilion.

UNLV is known for having some of the top facilities in the country, in the world's most exciting city, and USA Basketball was eager to take advantage of the opportunity. While it was a very short camp, players and coaches agreed that it was extremely helpful in the USA's preparations for London next summer. This was the first time since winning the 2010 FIBA World Championship gold medal that everyone from the group was on the court again. Led by USA and UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma, the 2011 May training roster was highlighted by WNBA veterans Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker, Sue Bird and Kara Lawson, and AP All-Americans Maya Moore and Brittany Griner.

All 23 athletes who actively participated in the three-day event are eager to earn a final spot on the 12-man roster for the 2012 Olympics. The entire group will meet again in October, at a training site to be determined. Following the third day of camp, all of the professional athletes flew to their respective cities for their WNBA teams, as it was time report for the first day of WNBA training camp. The UNLV Women's Basketball team was excited to host USA Basketball, and looks forward to the opportunity to do it again in the near future.
