LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 3-over-par 287 on Thursday and is in sixth place at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort (par 71, 7,144 yards).
The Rebels trail tournament-leader San Diego State by nine shots after the Aztecs opened the tournament with a 6-under 278. TCU and BYU are both tied for second at 1-under 283, followed by Colorado State and Wyoming in a tie for fourth at 2-over. Air Force is seventh at 5-over, New Mexico is eighth at 7-over and Utah is ninth at 13-over.
Wyoming's Gabe Maier holds the individual lead by two shots at 6-under 65. He collected six birdies, 11 pars and a bogey on the day. San Diego State's Johan Carlsson and Colorado State's Ryan Peterson, the defending MWC Men's Golf individual champion, are both tied for second at 4-under 67. UNLV sophomore Kevin Penner leads all Rebel individuals as he is in a tie for seventh at 1-under 70. UNLV teammate and junior Derek Ernst is also in the top-10. He is in a tie for 10th at even par 71.
Other Rebel scores: freshmen Blake Biddle and Nicholas Maruri are both tied for 22nd at 2-over 73, and sophomore Arthur Kim is tied for 42nd at 8-over 79.
Play at the 54-hole tournament will continue on Friday with 18 holes and conclude on Saturday. Play begins each day at 7 a.m. PDT. Live stats for the MWC Championship are available through a link on UNLVRebels.com.
