LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team again led the league by putting a total of seven players on the 2011 Academic All-Mountain West Team, which was released this week.
The seven honorees tied the program record set in 2008. New Mexico and Utah also had seven players on the list this season.
Leading UNLV's contingent was senior Mehdi Bouras (3.52) who made his third appearance on the list the same season as being named the MW Player of the Year.
Two sophomores made their second straight appearance -- Johannes Markel (3.57) and Bernard Schoeman (3.07) - while sophomores Rene Ruegamer (3.95) and Alex Bull (3.54) and freshmen Tamas Batyi (3.65) and Willie Sublette (3.23) rounded out the group.
To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor.
It was also announced that head coach Owen Hambrook's program also led all MW men's tennis programs in number of 2011 Scholar-Athletes with four. Adding the even more impressive honor were Rebels Bouras, Bull, Markel and Ruegamer.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
