GREELEY, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (0-1) suffered a 3-1 loss (25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18) to the Colorado Buffaloes (1-0) in the 2011 season opener for both teams at Northern Colorado's Hampton Inn & Suites Classic in Greeley, Colo. UNLV got strong showings on the offensive side of the ball from newcomers Elisa Brochado and Daryn Glenn, while Taylor Richard performed well on the defensive end.
CU out-hit UNLV by a .260 to .169 clip with attacking errors being the main difference between the two hitting figures. The Buffs had nine less errors in the match (17-to-26) and registered five or fewer miscues in three of the match's four sets. UNLV, on the other hand, tallied six or more errors three times. CU topped out at a .333 hitting efficiency in the fourth frame and hit no worse than .176 in any set. The Rebels best effort was a .312 average in the third, while they stayed in the .100s the remaining sets.
Brochado and Glenn had identical numbers in their first-career matches playing for UNLV. They each hit .241 and had 11 kills and four attacking errors on 29 swings. Brochado also contributed five digs, two assists and one assisted block, while Glenn added seven digs and one ace.
Richard had a match-high 18 digs and served up one ace in her first time wearing a Rebel uniform.
Madeline Westman and Candice Thomas both had nine kills in the match. Westman hit .235 to Thomas' .190. Both of them had a dig apiece, while Westman assisted on two blocks and Thomas had one solo and one assisted putback.
Stephanie Thelen and Kendra Glendenning split the setting duties for UNLV and had 20 and 16 assists, respectively.
The Buffs were led by Kerra Schroeder's double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs. Nikki Lindow joined Schroeder in the double-digit kill category with 11 of her own. The offense primarily ran through the pair, as they combined for 80 of the team's 131 attacks.
Alyssa Valentine dished out a match-high 40 assists for CU, while Megan Beckwith had a team-best 15 digs.
After watching Colorado take control of the first two frames of the match, UNLV countered with a win of its own after intermission to pull within one at 2-1. The Rebels trailed by two at the 4-2 juncture before rattling off six straight points to stake themselves to an 8-4 lead and never looked back. UNLV hold a three point or more lead on CU the remainder of the set and even extended the distance to eight points at the 22-14 mark.
The fourth set was tightly contested and played as close as three points until the final six serves. The set featured five ties with the final one occurring at 11-11. CU trailed by two at 11-9 before turning things around in its favor and winning 16 of the final 23 points to claim the set and subsequently the match.
UNLV returns to action at 7:00 pm MT (6:00 pm MT) Friday night when they face Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
Notes: UNLV is now 6-10 in season openers and 3-9 in season openers that occur either on the road or at a neutral site dating back to 1996 ... Stephanie Thelen set a career-high with 20 assists in today's match, her previous high was 19 set in 2010 against Wyoming on Nov. 6.
