Rebels Win In Overtime Over Cal St. Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - Junior midfielder Jonny Espinoza scored his first goal of the season in the 93rd minute to give the UNLV men's soccer team (1-1) a 2-1 overtime win over Cal State Northridge (1-1) on Thursday night in the Cal State Northridge Labor Day Classic at Matador Soccer Field.

Junior defender Mike Mota fired a shot that was redirected to Espinoza, who fired from the top of the box for the golden goal.

The contest was scoreless until the 67th minute when Mota scored his first goal of the season and gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead with a shot from 20 yards out. Cal State Northridge's Edwin Rivas tied the score at 1-1 on a header after a corner in the 79th minute. Rivas' goal was assisted by Nicholas Hamilton and Chris Smith.

The Matadors had 19 shots to UNLV's 11. Sophomore Ryan Harding recorded three saves as UNLV's goalkeeper, while Michael Abalos had two saves in goal for Cal State Northridge. The Matadors had five shots on goal, while UNLV had four. Cal State Northridge had eight corners to two for UNLV.

The Rebels will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3, concluding play in the Cal State Northridge Labor Day Classic against Cal State Fullerton at 4:30 p.m.
