Phoenix Top Rebels On Late Score

Sept. 11, 2011

Box Score

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV (1-4) had a strong offensive effort all afternoon long with 18 shots, including 10 on goal, but strong goalkeeping from Green Bay (2-1-1) and a late score led the Phoenix to a 2-1 win over the Rebels in the final game of the Nike Invitational in men's college soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

The Rebels were the aggressors the entire game, taking nine shots each half. Most notably, Nick Marshall and Salvador Bernal had several in close shots, but Green Bay Ryan Wehking make several impressive saves, including on some point blank shots to keep UNLV out of the goal. After a scoreless first half, UNLV would take a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when Joaquin Rivassent over a long pass to Bernal, and the freshman forward sent a hard shot to the right post for the score, his second of the year.

Green Bay tied up the score in the 55th minute, when Alonso Flores blasted in a shot from 30 yards over Rebel goalkeeper Ryan Harding. The final 15 minutes was played in a rain and hail storm, which briefly held up the game. Following a near miss at the Phoenix goal, the Phoenix went on the attack, and Sam Krenzien would tally the game-winner when he made a move through the Rebel backline, escaped the pressure and sent a shot past Harding for the goal in the 86th minute. Tony Walls was credited with an assist on the score.

UNLV's final shot advantage was 18-13, and 10-7 on goal. The Rebels also had six corner kicks to four for the Phoenix. Harding finished with five saves in goal, while Wehking was credited with seven.

The Rebels return to action on Friday, Sept. 16, when they play at UC Riverside at 7 pm.
