Rebels Soar Past The Eagles

LUBBOCK, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (2-3) wrapped up a perfect Friday at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas with a 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12) victory over the Morhead State Eagles (2-3). UNLV swept Central Arkansas earlier in the day before going the distance against MSU. The Rebels were led by career matches by many players, which included double-doubles from Elisa Brochado and Stephanie Thelen.

The Rebels fell behind after the first set, but rallied to knot the score at 1-all before intermission. UNLV kept the momentum in its favor with a second-straight set win for a quick 2-1 lead. MSU tied things up at 2-2 before watching UNLV run claim the fifth and final frame.

All five sets were won by the squad that owned the best hitting efficiency in each frame. UNLV out-hit MSU .205 to .192. The Rebels topped out at .389 in the fifth and hit .158 or better in four of the five sets. The Eagles had their best effort in the fourth (.353), while three of the five were .136 or better.

The match featured 27 ties and nine lead changes.

Thelen, who had set a personal-best in assists earlier in the day, dished out a staggering 53 helpers against the Eagles. She tallied her first career double-double when she coupled 11 digs with her assist tally. She also had three assisted blocks, one kill and one ace.

Brochado notched her first double-double as a Rebel when she combined 14 kills with 16 digs. She also chipped in two blocks (one solo) and one ace.

Makenzie Moea'i smashed a career-high 20 kills in the Rebel win off of .300 hitting and had two digs, as well.

Joining Brochado and Moea'i in the double-digit kills were Daryn Glenn and Madeline Westman with 10 apiece. Glenn fell one dig shy of notching her first career double-double with nine. She also had five assisted blocks, three aces and two assists. Westman hit a whopping .529 and added three assisted blocks.

Taylor Richard led the Rebels in digs with 18 to give the Rebels three players with 10 or more digs.

The Eagles had two players tally double-doubles with Caitlin Clark (55 assists, 14 digs) and Aryn Bohannon (14 kills, 16 digs) achieving the feat. Laura McDermott had 16 kills for MSU to give the squad three attackers with 10 or more kills. Leslie Schellhaas led the team in digs with 20.

UNLV is back in action Saturday at noon CT (10:00 am PT) against Northwestern State. The match is the final one for the Rebels at the Invitational.
